While there are some excellent free options available on YouTube to get started, taking the plunge and exploring some paid, in-depth courses has really helped me develop further as a melodic house artist.
In this article, I’m going to cover the online courses I personally benefited from when it comes to melodic house and techno, and also take a quick look at some of the sample packs I’ve used to complement them and support my sound.
Quick summary
Music Theory for Melodic Techno and House and the Ben Böhmer masterclass from Production Music Live are my top online course recommendations for melodic house and techno producers looking to improve their production skills. The Organica Vol. 4 and Vol. 5 sample packs are ideal if you want high-quality, organic sounds to use in your tracks.

Why I use Production Music Live (PML)
Although it may not feel like it if it’s one of your favourite genres, melodic house (and techno) are both actually quite niche. For this reason, I believe that finding high-quality courses that cover these specific genres is really important — rather than generic “house” or “electronic” music production courses.
That’s why I use Production Music Live (PML) as my go-to provider for educational material in these genres. Unlike Udemy or the more generic online learning platforms, PML lives and breathes electronic genres like melodic house and techno, and their start-to-finish courses are excellent.
I first came across PML a few years ago through some of their excellent videos on their YouTube channel, and have taken deeper dives into their more in-depth courses since then. So let’s now take a look at the PML classes and courses I’ve found the most value in over the past few years when it comes to melodic house music production.
Ben Böhmer masterclass
If you’ve read any of my articles before, you probably already know that I’m a big fan of Ben Böhmer’s music. Ben Böhmer In The Studio from Production Music Live offers an excellent insight into how Böhmer creates his music.

What the course covers
Most of this short course is centred on a track breakdown of one of Böhmer’s most popular tracks, “Beyond Beliefs.” During this section, Böhmer sits down with PML’s François and walks the viewer through exactly how he created the song from start to finish.
If you’re looking for a breakdown of how Böhmer creates his melodic house tracks, this course offers an incredible insight. I first saw some clips of the track breakdown on PML’s YouTube channel, but the full version offers a much more detailed look at how he makes his music.
There is also a separate bonus section where Böhmer creates a new track idea from scratch and walks you through the basics of his music production process.
Who I’d recommend this course for
- You’re a producer with a keen interest in melodic house who wants to learn directly from a leading artist.
- You’re a fan of Ben Böhmer’s music and want to understand how he creates his unique sound.
As a melodic house producer and a big fan of Böhmer’s music, this is one of the online courses I’ve personally found most valuable.
Music Theory for Melodic Techno and House
If you’re serious about producing melodic house and techno, you’ll need to know some fundamental music theory basics. Music Theory for Melodic Techno and House from Production Music Live is another course that I highly recommend, having purchased and completed it myself.

What the course covers
This course breaks down the fundamentals of music theory specifically related to melodic house and techno. It covers the core foundations you’ll need to know for creating that emotive, lush melodic house and techno sound, focusing on the technical aspects of chord progressions, arpeggios, melodies and more.
The course features more than 10 hours of learning materials, including music theory basics for beginners, melodic house chord progressions, and more advanced techniques. It also comes bundled with a midi pack that you can use to experiment with and apply what you’ve learned.
The course covers breakdowns of tracks from PML’s instructors in the style of a variety of different artists, including Ben Böhmer, Tim Green, Rüfüs Du Sol and more.
Who I’d recommend this course for
- You’re a beginner who is keen to quickly grasp the basics of producing melodic house and techno music.
- You’re experienced in producing melodic house and techno and want to add some more foundational music theory to your armoury, while also exploring more advanced techniques.
- You’re looking for a course that comes bundled with midi packs to help spark inspiration for new tracks and sounds.
This course really helped me to step up my productions. It laid the foundations for a lot of the music I’ve released recently and it has been an invaluable addition to my journey as a melodic house producer.
The importance of high-quality sample packs and presets
One thing I’ve learnt as I’ve grown as a producer is the importance of having a small number of high-quality, reliable samples you can call on quickly while you’re in the creative flow. I’m talking about shaker loops, hi-hats, and kick drums that can help shape the feel of your melodic house and techno productions.

I’m personally a huge fan of the Organica Vol. 4 and Vol. 5 packs from Production Music Live. They feature a huge library of organic, royalty-free samples that can be quickly integrated into your productions, and they’re the packs I reach for most often when producing melodic house.
U-he Diva is my top recommended virtual synth for melodic house, and these packs also come with some brilliant presets that have become key tools in helping me shape my sound.
You can check out my separate article covering some of my favourite Diva presets for melodic house and techno, which includes several PML sample packs too.
Conclusion — which course should you start with?
If you’re just getting started, I’d recommend beginning with Music Theory for Melodic Techno and House to build solid foundations that will carry over into every track you make.
If you already have some experience and want a deeper look into how modern melodic house is actually put together (and/or are a particular fan of Ben Böhmer), the Ben Böhmer course is a really great choice — and one I’ve personally found valuable in shaping my own productions.
